Nocturnal singing by diurnal birds in Afrotropical highlands

Abstract: Most bird species are active by day. However, even typically diurnal species have been observed to sing by night, although the functions and mechanisms of this behaviour are not well understood. In our study, we focused on nocturnal singing by diurnal birds in Afrotropical highlands (Bamenda Highlands, Cameroon). We recorded 48-h soundscapes in 18 random recording sites using autonomous sound recorders to examine the occurrence and intensity of nocturnal singing among diurnal birds. We applied three definition… Show more

“…Promising directions for future research include the quantitative analysis of influential factors and their response mechanisms as well as the establishment of a global animal soundscape database. “…Surprisingly, few studies have tested the function of nocturnal song in diurnal birds (La, 2012;Searcy & Andersson, 1986). Though traditionally believed rare, nocturnal song is common in temperate regions, having been recorded in approximately a quarter of diurnal species in regions of North America and Europe (Budka et al, 2021;Kulaga & Budka, 2020;La, 2012). More research examining how song varies with timing, motivation, context and sex is required to begin to understand why diurnal birds also sing at night.…”
