Noble Metal-Based Nanocomposites for Fuel Cells

Abstract: Noble metal-based nanocomposites are attractive for a rich variety of electrocatalytic applications as they can exhibit not only a combination of the properties associated with each component but also synergy due to a strong coupling between different constituents. Using noble metal as the base component, a plenty of methods have been recently demonstrated for the synthesis of noble metal-based nanocomposites with novel structures (e.g., alloys, core-shell, skin and 1D/2D structures). In this chapter, an accou… Show more

“…Fuel cells exhibit high efficiency of energy conversion and their electro-catalytic reactions produce minimal pollution relative to the polluting nature of combustion engines. Mostly the by-products are waste heat and water, which are environmentally acceptable [ 2 ]. Fuel cells are classed based on the type of electrolyte they utilize, which determines the operating temperature and catalyst that is appropriate for those conditions.…”

“…Gold nanoparticles having different dimensions are produced by using microbes as reducing agent. In microbial fuel cell, electrode surface can be modified with more stable and biocompatible nanoparticles of gold in the form of colloids called electron detector [81,82,[98][99][100][101]. Literature supported the exploitation of modified electrode with gold nanoparticles for immobilization of redox enzymes and proteins, carbon paper modified with Au nanoparticles generated high-intensity current as well as healthy microbial biofilm formation as reported by Sun et al [96].…”
