No Impact of Corticosteroid Use During the Acute Phase on Persistent Symptoms Post-COVID-19

Abstract: Persistent COVID-19 symptoms may be related to residual inflammation, but no preventive treatment has been evaluated. This study aimed to analyze, in a prospective cohort, whether corticosteroid use in the acute phase of COVID-19 in hospitalized patients may reduce the risk of persistent COVID-19 symptoms. A total of 306 discharged patients, including 112 (36.6%) from the ICU, completed a structured face-to-face assessment 4 months after admission. Of these, 193 patients (63.1%) had at least one persistent sym… Show more

“…ICU admission is also established as a risk factor for long COVID (31) and a longer length of hospital stay, which, in turn, has also been indicated as a factor associated with persistence at 6-month follow-up (30). In the same vein, a shorter hospital stay was inversely associated with prolonged COVID syndrome (29), as well as a greater number of symptoms during the acute stage of the process (2,(31)(32)(33). Thus, patients who required ICU admission reported a greater decrease in the quality of life than those who did not (34).…”

“…The WHO recommends that patients with con rmed and suspected COVID-19 have access to follow-up care if they have persistent symptoms. (1) Long-COVID, de ned as symptoms that continue or develop after more than 4 weeks after getting COVID-19, has been associated with numerous dysfunctions (2). Described as one of the most prevalent symptoms in long-term, dyspnea is an important multifactorial symptom patient-centered that remains in high proportions since the rst evaluations after hospital discharge and persistent in a group of patients even 2 years of follow-up.…”
