The environmental change by the society is recurring and has been intensified since the first civilizations. However, the lack of conservationist practices has caused the emergence of degraded areas, whose recovery is fundamental for the sustainability. In this context, this paper aims at analyzing the environmental recovery as a public policy strategy supported in the Brazilian legislation. As methodology, a documental and analytical research was developed on the regulations, discussed at a multidisciplinary perspective, from the view of legal and engineering specialists, from the agricultural and environmental areas. As a result, it was identified a collection of rules pointing at a significant commitment on the definition of guidelines. On the other hand, this meaningful quantity of legal mechanisms, associated to misalignment, may cause damages to its effectiveness. In conclusion, we can consider that environmental reclamation is widely regulated, and it represents one of the main strategies of the environmental public policy adopted in Brazil. Comprehending the size distribution within a population and grasping its connection to tree maturation (onset of reproductive phase) is pivotal for formulating sustainable management strategies and conserving numerous tree species. The objective of this study was to compare the structure and probability of fruit production of Carapa guianensis in two types of forest (varzea, or floodplain, vs. terra firme, or upland) in the northeastern Amazon, Brazil. The study was conducted in four permanent plots of 300 × 300 m (two for each type of forest). All individuals ≥10 cm in diameter at breast height (DBH) were mapped and measured for DBH, height, and canopy characteristics (shape and position), and liana infestation. Sixty‐seven trees were inventoried in the upland forest and 297 in the floodplain forest. The trees were larger in the upland (33.36 ± 1.84 cm) than in the floodplain (21.92 ± 1.5 cm) and more than half (56%) of the upland trees and more than two thirds (67%) of floodplain trees were reproductive. The minimum diameter for fruit production in the floodplain (10.2 cm of DBH) was more than two times smaller than in the upland (25.5 cm of DBH). The probability of fruit production of a tree of the same size was twice as high in the floodplain compared with the upland, and trees with rounded canopies had a higher probability of fruit production in the upland. Our results showed that the probability of fruit production can be modeled with variables of tree size and canopy shape, and that intrinsic factors of the forests influence the reproductive maturity of C. guianensis which presents greater precocity and productive potential of seeds in the estuarine floodplain forest of the Amazon River.Abstract in Portuguese is available with online material.

Este estudo teve como objetivo descrever a composição florística, a estrutura e as formas de vida do estrato inferior de uma floresta ombrófila densa aluvial na Área de Proteção Ambiental Ilha do Combu, Belém, Pará. Foram selecionadas quatro parcelas de 20 m x 20 m (0,16 ha) divididas em 1.289 subparcelas de 1 m². Foi classificada a categoria de tamanho e a forma de vida das espécies. Calculou-se a densidade, frequência, categoria de tamanho e regeneração natural relativa. A diferença de abundância, riqueza, índice de Shannon e equabilidade entre as categorias foi testada com ANOVA. Foram amostradas 33 famílias, 63 gêneros, 79 espécies e 26.885 indivíduos. Fabaceae, Araceae, Arecaceae, Acanthaceae e Meliaceae apresentaram maior riqueza. O Índice de Shannon e Equabilidade foram de 2,63 e 0,60, respectivamente para a área total. Pariana campestris e Anthurium sinuatum apresentaram maior densidade, categoria de tamanho e regeneração natural relativa. As herbáceas apresentaram maior porcentagem de indivíduos e regeneração natural relativa e as árvores a maior riqueza. CT1 (15 cm ≥ AT) foi diferente das demais categorias, apresentando menor abundância e riqueza. Conclui-se que a dominância de herbáceas em porcentagem de indivíduos e regeneração natural relativa e a menor abundância e riqueza na CT1 é consequência das atividades antrópicas realizadas como o manejo intensivo da palmeira-açaí (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) nas proximidades das áreas inventariadas.
