The title compounds crystallize in their dimeric, azodioxy form, but their dilute solutions at room temperature contain only the monomeric, nitroso form. By dissolving the crystals at temperatures below -60 'C, dilute solutions of the dimers could be obtained, because thermal equilibration of the monomer and dimer no longer takes place at this temperature. The absorption spectra of the dimers, their dissociation kinetics at various temperatures above -60 "C, and their photochemistry in solution at and below -60 'C were thus investigated. The only photochemistry observed was a very efficient photo-dissociation of dimer to monomer, which takes place with close to unity yield even at -1 70 "C. The activation energies for the thermal dissociation of the dimers were found to be 80-100 kJ mol-l.

On '71, n*-excitation the 6-keto-enones 5-8 are isomerized to compounds B (18, 22, 26, 28) via 1,3-acyl shift and to compounds C (19, 23, 27, 29) via 1,2-acyl shift, whereas the p, y , 6, E-unsaturated ketone 9 gives the isomers 32 and 33 by 1,2-and 1,5-acyl shift, respectively. Furthermore, isomerization of 6 to 24, dimerization of 8 to 30 and addition of methanol to 8 (8 -+ 31) is observed. Unlike 7 and 8 the acyclic ketones 5, 6 and 9 undergo photodecarbonylation on '71, 71"-excitation Evidence is given, that the conversion to B as well as the photodecarbonylation of 5, 6 and 9 arise from an excited singulet state, but the conversion to C as well as the dimerization of 8 from the T,-state.

This review is an attempt to summarize the literature pertinent to singlet molecular oxygen over the period June 1975-June 1976. Reports on this topic span a wide range of interests: from theoretical attempts to understand, and consequently predict, the interaction between '02 and organic materials, to applications of these reactions to complex biological systems. Although such a survey is necessarily heterogeneous and can hardly be exhaustive, it emphasizes the interdisciplinary aspects of this subject.
