Current turfgrass fertilizer recommendations do not account for plant‐available soil N mineralized from labile C fractions. The Solvita Soil CO2–Burst (SSCB) test can measure mineralizable C via soil CO2 respiration. This study was conducted across 3 yr (2014–2016) in Connecticut to determine: (i) if SSCB–C concentrations are correlated to responses from predominately Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) and tall fescue [Schedonorus arundinaceus (Schreb.) Dumort.] lawns, and (ii) the probability of turfgrass responses being equal to or greater than responses from common urea rates in relation to SSCB–C concentrations. Randomized complete block design field experiments were set out with 23 rates of organic fertilizer (0–2000 kg N ha−1 yr−1) and four different rates of urea (50, 100, 150, and 200 kg N ha−1 yr−1). Yearly spring soil samples were analyzed for SSCB–C concentrations and correlated with turfgrass responses. Growth and quality responded positively and linearly (P < 0.001) to SSCB–C concentrations, but variability was high and correlations were relatively weak. When spring soil SSCB–C concentrations were ≥91, 113, 166, and 211 mg kg−1, there was a ≥90% probability that overall combined responses across species and variables would be equal to or greater than responses obtained from urea rates of 50, 100, 150, and 200 kg N ha−1 yr−1, respectively. The SSCB test has promise for predicting the probability of soils supporting turfgrass whose performance equals or exceeds benchmark values. This would be helpful in guiding N fertilization, but high variability within the test may limit its predictive ability.

Ensuring ecological sustainability in fragile ecosystems has always been a top priority in China. Under the ‘Grain for Green’ Program (GGP), Caragana korshinskii Kom plantations are valued for their important use in soil and water conservation efforts on the Loess Plateau. This study was to estimate biomass increment and carbon accumulation in five different age classes [young age (YO), middle age (MI), pre‐mature (PR), mature (MA) and post‐mature (PO)], as well as the distribution of carbon stock among the various biomass components and soil depths. The results showed afforestation with C. korshinskii resulted in a significant increase in plant biomass and carbon stock, and soil organic carbon stocks. The total ecosystem carbon stock showed a notable carbon sink increase rate of 1.33 Mg ha−1 yr−1 from the YO to the MA stage, and then slightly decreased. The total biomass carbon of the understory plants represented only a relatively small fraction in the ecosystem, accounting for 2.4%–8.7% (median 3.8%). The proportion of ligneous components (roots, stems and branches) of C. korshinskii was increased following stand development. Our study suggested that C. korshinskii plantations should be harvested and revegetated following the MA stage (~35 years). Continuation of the GGP on the Loess Plateau, together with maturation of C. korshinskii trees over the next few years, will increase carbon sequestration in the medium term. Most research on nitrate‐nitrogen (NO3–N) leaching in turfgrass was conducted on recently established sites and indicates that leaching poses little risk to the environment. The potential for greater NO3–N leaching from mature turf sites is relatively unknown. Nitrogen (N) leaching from a Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) turf was measured for 15 yr using monolith lysimeters. From 1998 through 2002, half of the lysimeters were treated annually with urea at a high rate of 245 kg N ha−1 (49 kg N ha−1 application−1) and half of the lysimeters were treated at a low rate of 98 kg N ha−1 (24.5 kg N ha−1 application−1). Flow‐weighted mean NO3–N concentrations in leachate for the low N rate were below 5 mg L−1 for every year but one of the 15 yr of research. For the high N rate, NO3–N concentrations in leachate for many dates from 2000 through 2002 were higher than the drinking water quality maximum contaminant level of 10 mg L−1. Due to high concentrations of NO3–N in leachate, the high N rate was reduced from 245 to 196 kg ha−1yr−1 in 2003. From 2004 through 2013, there was a decline in NO3–N leaching. For both N rates, the flow‐weighted mean NO3–N concentration in 2013 was less than in 1998, when the research was initiated. This research indicates that, as a turfgrass system ages, there is a critical annual N rate, above which NO3–N concentration in leachate may exceed the maximum contaminant level, and below which there is minimal risk.
