A procedure to analyze sewage sludge (SS) pyrolysis liquids based on solvent fractionation has been developed. Pyrolysis liquids are separated into three different fractions: heptane soluble (Hep‐sol), dichloromethane soluble (DCM‐sol), and hydrochloric acid soluble (HCl‐sol). Diverse techniques (GC‐MS, UPLC‐TOF‐MS) were employed to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze liquid fractions to assess the potential production of value‐added chemicals. Aliphatic hydrocarbons, aliphatic nitriles, and steroids were mostly separated in the Hep‐sol fraction, phenols and fatty acids in the DCM‐sol fraction, and carboxylic acids and amides in the HCl‐sol fraction. The largest production was obtained for ammonia (10–14 kg per tonne of SS) and α‐olefins (8–9 kg per tonne of SS). The potential production of some of these value‐added chemicals from SS pyrolysis liquid was compared with their current European production. In the case of α‐olefins, 16 % of their European production could be achieved by SS pyrolysis.

Summary The processing of waste through pyrolysis technology is gaining momentum worldwide and is considered to be a green technology to reduce CO2 emissions. This study is devoted to analysing the lignocellulosic biomass (date palm) and wastewater‐derived microalgae and the carbon‐rich char produced between temperature range (400°C‐600°C) from these biomass types. The properties of microalgae char showed that significant variation with date palm char exhibited high heating values (24‐28 MJ/kg), low ash content (11%‐16%), and high energy yield (48%‐42%). Algal biomass char showed considerably high nitrogen content (6%‐7%) as compared with date palm char (<1%), lower stability, and more significant influence on the price with respect to treatment temperature. Quaternary, pyrrolic, and pyridinic nitrogen species were found on the surface of the microalgae char, whereas no nitrogen species detected on date palm char due to low nitrogen content. The activation energy was also noted to be high for algal char during pyrolysis and combustion process. It can be concluded that date palm char is suitable for energy applications, whereas, algal char can be used for soil amendment, wastewater treatment, and applications requiring nitrogen‐doped char.

Summary Tremendous amounts of organic residue from manufacturing herbal medicines and inorganic red mud waste from mining bauxite ores are landfilled each year in China. To study the potential for their beneficial co‐use, chemical looping gasification (CLG) was tested in which the organic residue was used as the fuel and the red mud was the oxygen carrier that is needed for CLG. Parametric testing was performed using a thermo‐gravimetric analyzer and a bench‐scale fluidized bed reactor to optimize CLG operations that could maximum syngas production, enrich H2 concentrations and obtain effective conversion of the residue. Physical and chemical characterization of the organic residue and red mud before and after CLG testing showed that some filamentous ash from the organic residue remained on the surface after testing, and potassium from the organic residue migrated onto the surface of the oxygen carrier. The characterization and testing results suggested that CLG may be an advantageous technology to effectively convert an organic waste into syngas and an inorganic waste into a usable product, thereby establishing an approach for beneficial waste resource utilization.
