The continuous development of world aquaculture demands new strategies and alternatives aimed to achieve sustainability. The use or microorganisms in aquaculture has greatly evolved during the last two decades. From being considered as a potential threat, during the last years, they have been used as probiotics and inclusively as food source for fish and crustacean. The microbial‐based systems represent one of the most viable strategies to achieve a sustainable aquaculture. In short, these systems are based on the promotion of microbial proliferation, either autotrophic or heterotrophic microorganisms; these microbes are expected to use, recycle and transform the excess of nutrients from faeces, dead organisms, unconsumed food and diverse metabolites into biomass, which would be further consumed by the cultured organisms. Successful results on using microbial‐based systems have been documented around the world; however, there are key aspects to consider and yet to experiment before a system could be implemented. Some of those aspects are analysed in this manuscript, while new advances in the use of microbial‐based systems and recommendations are also presented.

ABSTRACT. Juveniles (3.5 ± 0.3 g) of the white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei were grown during 40 days with no water exchanges, no food addition and four initial densities (25, 50, 75 and 100 g m -3 , corresponding to between 8 and 32 shrimp m -2 ), to determine growth rates, which could be achieved using the periphyton growing on artificial substrates as the only food source. The experimental culture units were 12 polyethylene 1 m 3 cylindrical tanks with 4.8 m 2 of total submerged surface (bottom and walls), provided with 7.2 m 2 of artificial substrate (Aquamats™). There were no significant differences in the ammonia and nitrite concentrations determined in the four treatments (0.17-0.19 and 0.10-0.11 mg L -1 , respectively), which remained below the respective levels of concern for shrimp cultures. Mean survival was similar, and ranged from close to 91 to 97%, whereas there were significant differences in mean individual weight, which ranged from 11.9-10.6 g shrimp -1 for the two low initial densities (25 y 50 g m -3), to 8.3-7.7 g shrimp -1 for the other treatments. However, because of the high survival and of the higher initial density, the best biomass yield was with 100 g m -3 . The final nitrogen contents of sediment and water were lower than the initial values, and between 36 and 60% of the difference was converted into shrimp biomass. The contribution of biofilm to water quality and as a food source for the culture of the freshwater shrimp Neocaridina heteropoda heteropoda was assessed in indoor aquaria using a zero water exchange system. Two successive phases were conducted to evaluate biofilm development on different substrates (polyethylene net: PN, plastic bottles: PET, agrovelo: AV) and the effect of biofilm to shrimps culture. The biofilm grown on all substrates helped to keep a good water quality by the uptake of nitrogen compounds and the production of high levels of dissolved oxygen associated to the proliferation of autotrophic microorganisms. High survival, reproduction and hatching of shrimps were achieved in all groups mainly associated with good water quality. Final biomass of the shrimps was significant higher for PN and AV groups; while specific growth rate and the levels of lipids of the shrimps yielded similar values for all treatments indicating that the three substrates allowed the growth of a biofilm that resulted in a healthy food source with similar nutritional value for shrimps. The results show that the production of N. heteropoda heteropoda could be successfully conducted by a biofilm‐based culture system with no water exchange, and thus contributing to a better water use. All materials tested were suitable substrates for biofilm growth, though AV and PET could reduce significantly production costs when compared to the PN. Moreover, by the recycling and reuse of waste materials (such as plastic bottles) could contribute to the development of a responsible, sustainable and environmentally friendly culture method.
