Nitrincola tapanii sp. nov., a novel alkaliphilic bacterium from An Indian Soda Lake

Abstract: A novel Gram-stain-negative bacterial strain designated as MEB193T was isolated from a sediment sample collected from Lonar Lake, India. The cells were motile, non-spore-forming and rod-shaped. The strain was oxidase- and catalase-positive. It grew optimally at pH 9.0 and at 1 % (w/v) NaCl concentration at 30 °C. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, MEB193T belongs to genus Nitrincola , with … Show more

“…Meanwhile, MAG 012 clustered closely to Nitrincola lacisaponensis , and appears to belong to the same genus (Figure 5). Genus Nitrincola is composed of different haloalkaliphilic bacterial species belonging to family Oceanospirillaceae , with several of its members having been isolated from soda pans and lakes (Joshi et al ., 2020; Borsodi et al ., 2017). Lastly, MAG 015 paired with Dethiobacter alkaliphus AHT 1 in the phylogenetic tree.…”

“…There were also some Nitrincola stains isolated from haloalkaline soda lakes located worldwide in warm arid and semiarid areas [6–9]. Members of the genus Nitrincola are reported to be motile with a single polar flagellum, facultatively anaerobic, alkaliphilic (growing optimally at pH 8.0–10.0), chemoorganotrophic, oxidase-positive and catalase-positive [1–5]. Here, we describe a slightly halophilic but non-alkaliphilic strain, KXZD1103 T , which was isolated from the sediment collected at a cold seep field.…”

“… Nitrincola lacisaponensis 4CA T , was first isolated from a decomposing wood taken from the shore of Soap Lake, a saline and alkaline lake in the USA [1]. Nitrincola alkalisediminis MEB087 T and Nitrincola tapanii MEB193 T were isolated from sediment samples of alkaline Lonar Lake in Maharashtra, India [3, 4]. Nitrincola alkalilacustris ZV-19 T and Nitrincola schmidtii R4-8 T were isolated from soda pans located in the Kiskunsag National Park, Hungary [2].…”
