“…Through their continuous productivity, perennial crops can provide many benefits. These include (1) protecting soil from erosion (Ashworth et al., 2022), (2) reducing weed populations (Law et al., 2021; Zimbric et al., 2020), (3) preventing nutrient leaching (Culman et al., 2013; Huddell et al., 2022; Jungers et al., 2019), and (4) improving soil health by increasing soil organic matter, soil aggregate stability, and beneficial soil microbial communities (Crews & Rumsey, 2017; Culman et al., 2010; Duchene et al., 2020; Rakkar et al., 2023).…”

“…Ndff value refers to the contribution rate of 15 N absorbed by plant organs from fertilizers to the total N content in all organs and re ects the ability of plant organs to absorb and transfer fertilizer 15 N (Mariotti 1984; Zhang et al 2022b). According to the relevant studies, the absorption of 15 N by plants and the Ndff value of all organs show the trend of increasing with the increase of N application level after the addition of soil conditioners (Huddell et al 2023). According to the results of this study, the application of FTHSB to the treatment of leaves and stems provides a signi cantly stronger ability to transfer NH 4 + -N, NO 3 − -N and CO(NH 2 ) 2 -N than the treatment without FTHSB.…”

“…Utilization of water that is unavailable to annual crops can reduce nutrient losses to surface water and groundwater. Research has shown that intermediate wheatgrass grown for grain can reduce NO 3 leaching to groundwater—thus protecting rural drinking water sources while generating an economic return for farmers (Huddell et al., 2023; Jungers et al., 2019; Reilly et al., 2022). Similarly, Randall and Mulla (2001) showed that subsurface field drainage volume and nitrate N losses were 30–50 times higher beneath annual crops compared with perennial crops.…”
