Abstract:Alcohol withdrawal-related alterations in seizure-sensitive neural circuitry such as the hippocampus persist long after cessation of ethanol exposure. Furthermore, the L-type voltage-gated calcium channels are involved in this effect in that blockade of these channels during acute withdrawal alleviates alterations in seizure mechanisms on a long-term basis.
