Nickel(II) complexes of cyclic tetradentate thioethers

Abstract: Three tetradentate ligands, 1,4,8,11 -tetrathiacyclotetradecane (TTP), 2,5,9,12-tetrathiatridecane (TTT), and 13,14-benzo-1,4,8,11 -tetrathiacyclopentadecane (TTX), have been prepared. The nickel(II) tetrafluoroborate complexes of these ligands are the first low-spin nickel(II) species reported having four thioethers as donors. Ni(TTP)2+ and Ni(TTX)2+ constitute the first reported complexes of tetradentate macrocyclic ligands containing only sulfur donor atoms. Tetragonal Ni(TTP)X2 species, where X = NCS, Cl, … Show more

“…The ligand structures and abbreviated names are given in Fig. 2a-d. All but 3S2SH are new compounds; a synthesis of 3S2SH has been reported previously, but the compound was not utilized for mercury precipitation [47]. A key feature of these ligands is that they provide Hg with four sulfur bonds while remaining neutral, thereby reducing water solubility.…”

“…In contrast, complexes of these ligands with main group elements have been much less studied. Similarly studies exist of the 1,11-dioxa-4,8-dithiaundecane (1a) and 1,4,8,11-tetrathiaundecano (1b) with transition metals [5][6][7] but their chemistry with main group elements have not been studied until now.…”

“…Purification can be achieved by washing the crude brown liquid with saturated sodium carbonate solution and then water until the washings are neutral, drying over anhydrous MgS04, and recrystallizing from petroleum ether or by distilling under reduced pressure. Sodium (1.15 g, 50.0 mmol) was dissolved in commercial absolute ethanol (500 mL) under an atmosphere of dry nitrogen and 1,4,7,10-tetrathiadecane (12) To a solution of AgC104 (0.052 g, 0.25 mmol) in acetonitrile (10 mL) was added a solution of L3 (0.080 g, 0.25 mmol) in dichloromethane (5 mL). The resulting solution was filtered immediately and the filtrate was left in a beaker to evaporate slowly, giving eventually white crystals that were collected by filtration, washed with acetonitrile, and dichloromethane and dried in air.…”
