Niche Segregation Between Two Alpine Rosefinches: to Coexist in Extreme Environments

Abstract: Alpine habitats are expected to support fewer, morphologically distinct congeners that diverge in niche more fully to facilitate stable coexistence. We tested this prediction with a granivorous avian guild consisting of only two Carpodacus members that bred in a Tibetan alpine zone at 4,200-4,600 m a.s.l. These two species, Streaked rosefinch C. rubicilloides weighing 40 g and Pink-rumped rosefinch C. eos 20 g, represent the extreme of body size of their genus. Both rosefinch species as the dominant members of… Show more

“…3, clade II). However, where species of these two clades locally co-exist in the same habitat they occupy different niches with respect to the size and variation of food items (smaller vs. bigger grains) and height of nesting sites (C. rubicilloides and C. waltoni eos in the Xiongse Valley near Lhasa; Lu et al 2011). Like snowfinches, even the alpine sister species of rosefinches of these two clades (Fig.…”

“…Resource partitioning to reduce competition between sympatric congener species can occur along the axes of space, diet, and time (Lu, Gong & Ma, ; De Leon et al ., ). The two nuthatches in this study are found in the same habitats in their contact zone in Zagros Mountains, where they both feed on similar insect and plant foods.…”

“…Carpodacus pulcherrimus and C. waltoni are also slightly ecologically segregated, with the former preferring the brushy zone just above the mountain forest ( Juniperus and Rhododendron ; Diesselhorst, ), and the latter preferring alpine grassland, with Rosa and Berberis bushes (Lu, Gong & Ma, , Lu Xin, pers. comm.).…”
