NFV orchestrator placement for geo-distributed systems

Abstract: Abstract-The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) developed Network Functions Virtualization (NFV)Management and Orchestration (MANO) framework. Within that framework, NFV orchestrator (NFVO) and Virtualized Network Function (VNF) Manager (VNFM) functional blocks are responsible for managing the lifecycle of network services and their associated VNFs. However, they face significant scalability and performance challenges in large-scale and geo-distributed NFV systems. Their number and location… Show more

“…The authors propose an ILP to solve the optimization problem with optimality guarantees, a genetic algorithm, and a fast greedy algorithm. In [20] the authors consider the problem of allocating the minimum quantity of resources to perform the VNF placement in a two-level hierarchical geo-distributed infrastructure, proposing both an ILP and a Tabu Search heuristic algorithm. In [21] the usage of both computing and communication resources are balanced into a bi-objective optimization problem, which is proved to be NP-hard.…”

“…Indeed, it allows the easy adaptation of network services to changes in traffic pattern or operator requirements benefiting from the elastic nature of virtualised resources. The importance of orchestration for future networks brought attention from researchers that tackled specific orchestration aspects, such as dependability [5], security [6] [7], multi-tenancy [8], and orchestrator geo-placement [9].…”

“…Several authors proposed different optimization models and heuristic solutions for managing the VNF placement problem [9][10][11][12][13]. In this paper, we address such a problem by providing a novel integer linear programming (ILP) optimization model and a novel heuristic method to provide more scalable solutions in a viable time.…”
