“…In the mid to late 1960s, Beatrix and Allen Gardner taught Washoe and other chimpanzees approximately 130 signs each; the chimpanzees as a group mastered 460 signs while in the care of the Gardners, and more later (Gardner et al, 1989). Deborah and Roger Fouts adopted the Gardners' chimpanzees and showed that they continued to use the signs they had learned, even when no humans were present (Fouts & Mills, 1997).
