Purpose This study aims to discover how domain familiarity and language affect the cognitive load and the strategies applied for the evaluation of search engine results pages (SERP). Design/methodology/approach This study used an experimental research design. The pattern of the experiment was based upon repeated measures design. Each student was given four SERPs varying in two dimensions: language and content. The criteria of students to decide on the three best links within the SERP, the reasoning behind their selection, and their perceived cognitive load of the given task were the repeated measures collected from each participant. Findings The evaluation criteria changed according to the language and task type. The cognitive load was reported higher when the content was presented in English or when the content was academic. Regarding the search strategies, a majority of students trusted familiar sources or relied on keywords they found in the short description of the links. A qualitative analysis showed that students can be grouped into different types according to the reasons they stated for their choices. Source seeker, keyword seeker and specific information seeker were the most common types observed. Originality/value This study has an international scope with regard to data collection. Moreover, the tasks and findings contribute to the literature on information literacy.

Purpose This paper aims at assessing faculty members' information searching patterns and the process of determining their information sources' quality and credibility. Design/methodology/approach This study administered an online survey through email invitation to secure data from 987 (55%) faculty members of both public and private universities of Bangladesh. The data were analysed using various descriptive statistics, and parametric and non-parametric tests such as Mann–Whitney, Kruskal–Wallis, and one-way ANOVA tests, to see the significant differences according to demographic characteristics at a 0.05 level of significance. Findings This study's outcomes affirm that most participants use Google Scholar and ResearchGate when searching/seeking information. Furthermore, for authenticating the credibility and quality of information, most faculty members tried to identify the information source and applied personal knowledge regarding information authentication. The statistical test results also found significant differences among faculty members' demographic characteristics (gender, age, experience and area of specialization) using the various source types. No significant differences were observed for determining information credibility in terms of faculty members’ demographic characteristics. Research limitations/implications As a limitation, this study only includes public and private universities in Bangladesh. This research could be more comprehensive if faculty members from other countries had participated in the survey. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to approach this significant but less addressed area to understand faculty member's behaviour in terms of determining the quality and credibility of information resources in Bangladesh.

In this article, the authors argue that partnering with course faculty to develop and use open educational resources (OER) and open pedagogy to integrate information literacy (IL) into the curriculum. OER and open pedagogy can sustainably replace or compliment one-shot library sessions. As this case study indicates, creating an OER allowed a team of librarians and a professor to effectively scaffold the “Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education” (Framework) throughout a required large-enrollment undergraduate journalism course. Including openly licensed student tutorials in the OER created a more inclusive space for students to learn and become peer-educators. This case study outlines a process for using OER and an open pedagogy assignment to teach IL, and offers tips for how library workers can incorporate open educational practices (OEP) into their instructional sessions and collaborations.
