New Xenia Diterpenoids from the Indonesian Soft CoralXeniasp.

Abstract: Two new xeniolides, xeniolide-F (1) and 9-hydroxyxeniolide-F (2), along with isoxeniolide-A (3) and 7,8-oxido-isoxeniolide-A (4), have been isolated from Xenia sp. and their structures established on the basis of extensive NMR and MS studies.

“…A Druinella species, also from Fiji, was found to contain purealidin S 342 and purpuramine J 343, which were both moderately cytotoxic. 422 Seven mildly cytotoxic xenicane-skeletoned diterpenes 580-586 were isolated from Xenia umbellata collected off Taiwan. 333 Bastadin 21 346 was isolated from Ianthella quadrangulata from Queensland, Australia.…”

“…Soft corals belonging to the genus Xenia are a rich source of diterpenoids, 12,25 A major limitation regarding the exploration of natural products from marine invertebrates, especially diterpenes, has been the difficulty in obtaining these compounds in sufficient quantities. 1,27 First, attempting to reisolate reasonable amounts of the same compound from the organism is difficult given the changing natural growth environment of these organisms.…”
