New visions in experimental investigations of a supersonic under-expanded jet into a high subsonic crossflow

Abstract: A series of experiments was performed to investigate the interaction of an underexpanded axisymmetric supersonic jet exhausted from a flat plate with a high subsonic crossflow. The goal was to study the effect of boundary layer thickness (δ) and jet to freestream dynamic pressure ratio (J ) on flow field pressure distributions. The resulting measurements upstream of the jet showed that with increasing boundary layer thickness, the magnitude of the pressure coefficient decreases, whereas downstream of the jet, … Show more

“…Because of its importance in science and engineering, side jet interaction with free stream is studied extensively for high altitude and high Mach number conditions [10,11] as well as for subsonic Mach numbers [12][13][14][15][16][17][18] at sea level conditions. Detailed experimental flow field analysis using PIV measurements were made by Beresh et al [12][13][14], for study of penetration of a transverse / inclined supersonic jet into a subsonic compressible crossflow.…”

“…Jet control is one of the key techniques in aerodynamic design of advanced air vehicle. 3,4 Researchers have carried out a lot of research work on jet control. Spaid and Zukoski 5 studied the interaction between jet and different flow conditions, and studied the main parameters of jet interaction flow field.…”

“…1 Imperfectly expanded jet is a complicated process containing different compression and expansion waves which forms a diamond shape. 2,3 This phenomenon has been extensively studied experimentally, [4][5][6][7][8] numerically, 2 and analytically [9][10][11][12] ; however, each of the methods has its own limitations to explain the phenomenon completely. The position of the Mach disk is the key subject of experimental works in this area.…”
