New triterpenoidal saponins from Koelreuteria paniculata

Abstract: Bioassay guided fractionation and chemical investigation of the ethanolic extract of the aerial parts of Koelreuteria paniculata Laxm. (Sapindaceae), resulted in the isolation and identification of three new triterpenoid saponins 1–3 named Paniculatosoid A–C, along with eleven known compounds. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated using 1D and 2D NMR experiments, HRESIMS, and comparison with literature data. The occurrence of tridesmosidic saponin is reported for the first time from family S… Show more

“…3,6,7 Saponins are a diverse group of plant amphipathic glycosides 8 consisting of steroid or triterpenoid aglycone attached to one or more sugar chains. 9 The saponins structure can be seen in many plants; such as Sapindaceae, 10 Panax, 11 Gynostemma, 12 and Hippocastanaceae 13 (Fig. 1).…”

“…A representative crucial metabolite isolated from P. thonningii is D-3- O -methylchiroinosital, which possesses anthelmintic activity (Asuzu et al 1999), analgesic, antipyretic, antidiabetic, antioxidant, and antilipidemic activities (Asuzu and Nwaehujor 2013; Nwaehujor et al 2015); another potential example is C-methyl flavanols, which was identified from the same species and showed antibacterial and antiinflammatory activities (Ibewuike et al 1997). In continuation to our studies on African medicinal plants (Afolayan et al 2018; Mohamed et al 2016a, 2017, 2016b; Mostafa et al 2016), and based on our in-house battery of screening, we have perused leishmanial and trypnasomal studies on the chemical constituents of P. thonningii. …”

“…(family Sapindaceae) is an important ornamental plant [1,2] with pale yellow flowers and green leaves; it is often cultivated as street and park vegetation in Northern China [3]. K. paniculata also has important medicinal properties because it is rich in secondary metabolites, including gallate derivatives, cyanolipids, and flavonoids [3][4][5]. Secondary metabolites, which play an important role in plant growth, have been shown to affect plant defenses [6,7].…”
