New Triterpenoid N‐Acetylglycosides with Molluscicidal Activity from Tetrapleura tetraptera TAUB

Abstract: Activity‐guided fractionation of the MeOH extract of the fruits of Tetrapleura tetraptera TAUB. (Mimosaceae) afforded 4 saponins 1–4, which exhibited strong molluscicidal properties against the schistosomiasis‐transmitting snails Biomphalaria glabrata. Chemical, enzymatic, and spectral methods (DCI‐MS, 1H‐NMR, 13C‐NMR) showed that they were N‐acetylglycosides of oleanolic acid and of echinocystic acid. Apart from saponin 1 (aridanin), previously isolated from this plant, glycosides 2–4 are new naturally occurr… Show more

“…The fruits ofT. tetraptera contain N-acetyl glycosides of oleanolic acid and echinocystic acid, with activities similar to the saponins found in P. dodecandra (Maillard et al, 1989). In a two-year study, the water supply of 4villages near Ile-Ife in Nigeria was treated every 3 months with concentrated aqueous extracts of Aridan to give a known concentration of 20 mg!L.…”

“…It is worth noting that triterpene glycosides with 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-b-D-glucopyranose as an inner glycosyl unit at C-3 of the triterpene moiety, have been reported before from the other Leguminosae members Pithecellobium cubense and P. arboretum (Ripperger et al, 1981), Tetrapleura tetraptera (Adesina and Reisch, 1985;Maillard et al, 1989) and Entada phaseoloides (Okada et al, 1987(Okada et al, , 1988a.…”
