New Technique for Medial Patellar Desmotomy in Cattle and Donkeys

Abstract: The present technique is designed to transect the medial patellar ligament indicated for treatment of upward fixation of patella in cattle and donkeys. A medial patellar desmotomy was performed first on cadavers and then on 21 live cattle or donkeys. In live animals under local anesthesia, a sterile silk strand (USP 1) mounted on a curved needle is inserted through skin at the medial aspect of the medial patellar ligament to the subcutaneous fascia and directed beneath the ligament to emerge at opposite side. … Show more

“…Upward fixation of the patella is the most common clinical condition in the stifle joint in large animals [ 2 , 5 , 7 ]. Late pregnancy and early lactation are considered as predisposing factors in buffaloes [ 2 ], which is in agreement with the present finding, in which the cow was affected for the two consecutive gestation periods.…”

“…As it was indicated by several studies, upward fixation of patella could be treated both by surgical (open) method and blind (closed) method [ 2 , 5 , 7 – 9 ]. However, some authors described as the open surgical management method requires more postoperative care and is time-consuming when compared to closed method [ 2 , 4 ], but they did not indicate the length of time taken to complete the surgical procedure.…”

“…Medial patellar desmotomy is considered as gold standard of therapy. There are various form of conducting procedure standing, lateral recumbency with BP blade or silk (Naveen et al, 2013 andSherif, 2017) In this research study we discuss about the outcome of standing patellar Patellar desmotomy is a successful surgical procedure for stringhalt in cattle. In this paper describes about prevalence of upward fixation of patella respective of breed, age, status of the animal and level of mineral inclusion in Thalaivasal block of Salem, Tamilnadu.…”
