New Steroidal Saponins Isolated from the Rhizomes of Paris mairei

Abstract: The genus Paris is an excellent source of steroidal saponins that exhibit various bioactivities. Paris mairei is a unique species and has been widely used as folk medicine in Southwest China for a long time. With the help of chemical methods and modern spectra analysis, five new steroidal saponins, pamaiosides A–E (1–5), along with five known steroidal saponins 6–10, were isolated from the rhizomes of Paris mairei. The cytotoxicity of all the new saponins was evaluated against human pancreatic adenocarcinoma P… Show more

“…The cytotoxicity of compounds 1–3 against human cancer cell lines U251, SHG44, LN229 and HepG2 was evaluated by CCK‐8 method which was described in published articles [28] . All cells were cultured in DMEM medium supplemented with 10 % fetal bovine serum, 100 U/mL benzyl penicillin, and 100 U/mL streptomycin at 37 °C in a humidified atmosphere with 5 % CO 2 .…”

The logarithmic phase cells were seeded on 96-well plates at the concentration of 5 × 10 3 cell/mL and incubated with various concentrations (100, 50, 25, 12.5, 6.25, 3.12, 1.56, 0.78, and 0 μM in medium containing less than 0.1 % DMSO) of test compounds in triple wells for 48 h, and nimustine hydrochloride (ACNU) was used as the positive control.…”

“…yunnanensi. Since then, scholars all over the world have isolated about 67 steroidal saponins from 11 species of plants in the genus Paris [82] and have identified 323 compounds respectively [39], including steroidal saponins, phytosterols [83][84][85], polysaccharides [86], triterpenoids [87,88], flavonoids [89,90] and other chemical components [91][92][93]. Steroidal saponins are the primary compounds in P. polyphylla, accounting for about 52% of the total chemical components [39].…”
