New species and new combinations in the lichen generaFissurinaandHemitheciumfrom India

Abstract: In continuation of our ongoing revisionary studies on the lichen family Graphidaceae from India, a treatment of 25 species of the lichen genera Fissurina and Hemithecium from India is presented. In our earlier work on the lichen genus Fissurina, 16 species were reported from India. In the present study, 17 additional species of Fissurina from India are recognized. Nine species, viz. Fissurina andamanensis, F. disposita, F. immersa, F. indica, F. microcarpa, F. nicobarensis, F. simplex, F. sporolata, and F. sub… Show more

“…Fissurina is characterized by mostly slit-like lirellae (fissurine), which distinguish it from other lirellate members of Graphidaceae. In addition, the ascospores of the genus are thick-walled and halonate [ 15 , 16 ]. Thelotrema , on the other hand, contains species with mostly lepadinoid apothecia with more or less free excipulum lined internally by periphysoids [ 14 ].…”

“…In ascospore character, it also closely resembles F. submonospora B. O. Sharma et al . which has short emergent (0.5–1.0 mm long) lirellae with a slit-like disc; the labia are entire and the exciple convergent and entirely covered by a thalline margin (Sharma et al 2012).…”

“…Staiger with its 3-septate amyloid ascospores. Fissurina andamanensis is distinguished by its fissurine lirellae, large, 20–27 μm long ascospores (Sharma et al 2012) and the presence of salazinic acid, while F. khasiana has large, 16–19 × 8–10 μm ascospores and contains stictic and constictic acids. Fissurina humilis has a laterally carbonized exciple and large, 14–25 × 7–9 μm ascospores.…”

“…Colour reaction spot tests and thin-layer chromatography (TLC) in solvent system A were used for the determination of lichen compounds following Orange et al (2010). Lugol's solution was used to check the amyloidity of the hymenium, asci and ascospores.…”
