The building industry is responsible for a large amount of waste, and the measurement and modelling of this waste could be used to develop better waste management plans. Several theoretical models explain the relationships between waste and building characteristics, but local practices may result in different behaviours. This study aimed to measure and analyse the waste generated through construction. It was based on the analysis of 18 building sites located in the region of Porto Alegre, Brazil. Waste was measured at these sites, and the results showed an average waste generation rate of 0.151 m3 m-2. A regression analysis of the collected data presented a satisfactory performance in two models. The first model was developed to explain total waste generation, including the effects of certain attributes, with an R2 = 0.81. The changes in waste generated during construction were estimated. The second model considered time schedules and examined the effect of the construction stage on waste generation, and reached an R2 = 0.91. The model with time indicated an S-shaped relationship. The models presented satisfactory statistical parameters and could be used to produce better waste management plans in the preconstruction stage.

The construction industry plays a vital role in the economic development of any country. Concurrently, the sector also generates enormous quantities of construction and demolition waste (CDW) that damages the ecology causing environmental pollution and deteriorating human health. Recently, various governments and other organizations realized the importance of implementing construction waste management (CWM) practices to attain sustainability in construction. The current decade can be called a pathway for achieving the 2030 agenda for sustainable development goals in which CWM plays an inevitable role. However, accurately quantifying construction waste is necessary to successfully implement any CDW management plan. A detailed literature review for the current research revealed that limited information on the magnitude of construction waste is available in India. Therefore, the current paper proposes a practically viable model to estimate the waste generation index (construction waste generated per total floor area) of high-rise residential buildings in India. The waste quantification is being done based on the project documents and expert interviews. The methodology is later validated through a high-rise building with G + 18 stories located in Kerala, India. The study indicated that a high-rise concrete framed structure generates 122.3 kg m−2 of waste during construction. It was also noted that, concrete, aggregates and blocks constitute 92% of the total waste generated in the project. The developed model can also be used as a cornerstone for establishing a construction waste database at the regional level.

Resumen ste trabajo puso en relieve una experiencia pionera en Chile en lo que se refiere a la gestión de los residuos de construcción y demolición (RCD). El caso estudiado corresponde a la construcción de 17 viviendas unifamiliares ubicadas en un condominio habitacional en la ciudad de Temuco, Región de la Araucanía. Para su implementación se aplicó una metodología basada en un modelo de gestión de residuos desarrollado en España para estimar los RCD. Con la adopción de esta metodología de separación en obra de los residuos, los costos materiales se redujeron a la mitad; también se redujo el costo medioambiental de las obras en construcción. Con ello se ha comprobado que es viable la adaptación de la metodología española a un proyecto de urbanización chileno. Además, la aplicación de esta metodología genera un triple beneficio que repercute en lo ambiental, lo social y lo económico. Al mismo tiempo, se ha comprobado que la reutilización, reciclaje, tratamiento o eliminación de los residuos genera nuevos desafíos en el plano legislativo y de gestión de gobierno, elementos a considerar si Chile aspira a alcanzar estándares de países como Brasil o los de la Comunidad Europea en lo que respecta a la gestión de RCD. AbstractThis paper summarises a pioneering experience in construction and demolition waste management (C&DW) in Chile. The case study consists of the construction of 17 detached dwellings that are part of an urbanisation project in the city of Temuco, in the Araucana region. The methodology developed in Spain for the C&DW quantification is employed for the calculation of expected waste in construction projects. The implementation of the proposed methodology, which includes waste separation activities on the construction site, can halve management costs, as well as the environmental cost of construction works. The case study shows the feasibility and adaptation of the Spanish methodology to an urbanisation project in Chile. Furthermore, its application generates triple benefits: environmental, social and economic. At the same time, the new proposal to reuse, recycle, treat or eliminate the waste produced sets new challenges in the areas of legislation and government management, which are elements to be considered if Chile is to achieve C&DW managemant standards similar to those in place in Brazil and the European Union.
