New Processing Routes for Functionally Graded Materials and Structures through Combinations of Powder Metallurgy and Casting

Abstract: New processing routes for metal-matrix functionally graded materials (FGMs) and structures through combinations of powder metallurgy and casting are described in this chapter. Centrifugal mixed-powder method is introduced as a processing method for metal-matrix FGMs at first. The centrifugal mixed-powder method is a developed technique of centrifugal casting by setting predesigned mixed powder in a spinning mold in advance. As an example of processed FGMs by this method in our previous studies, Cu-based FGMs w… Show more

“…One of the most widely used methods for fabricating functionally graded samples is to produce laminated composite samples by changing the composition of materials in each layer [13,14]. This is in fact a noncontinuous change rather than a continuous change from one composition to another, a challenge that must be addresses properly in FGM production.…”

“…Zirconium Oxide (also called Zirconia) possesses excellent mechanical, thermal, and tribological properties such as high tensile strength, hardness, high fracture toughness, and corrosion and wear resistance [99]. It is widely used ceramics in the manufacturing of various engineering applications, such as refractories, cutting tools, structural opacifiers, and gas sensors [100].…”

“…The CDC method involves the merging of different metals and is particularly used in the production of Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs) through semi-solid casting. It has been noted to be a more cost-effective, straightforward, and successful method as compared to other techniques [16][17][18]. The use of the semisolid mixing process, which allows for the creation of a spherical grain structure with good mechanical properties and achieving desirable grain sizes and homogeneous mixtures, followed by a compression process to reduce porosity, will bring about a new development in the FGM production methods.…”
