Clinical Utility of Repeated Urimal Test of Articulation and Phonation for Patients with Childhood Apraxia of Speech

Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) causes inconstant oromotor production. We investigated the clinical efficacy of repeated urimal test of articulation and phonation (U-TAP) in CAS patients. Twenty-eight children were recruited: 19 with CAS and 9 with functional articulation disorder (FAD). Four age-matched typically developing children were also recruited. U-TAP was performed twice repeatedly, and the error rate of consonant accuracy (CA) was measured. Preschool Receptive-Expressive Language Scale (PRES) was also performed. The mean U-TAP CA showed a significant difference between the three groups, with 42.04% for CAS, 77.92% for FAD, and 99.68% for the normal group (p < 0.05). The mean difference between the two U-TAP CAs was 10.01% for CAS, 0.82% for FAD, and no difference for the normal group, revealing a significant intergroup difference between CAS and FAD (p < 0.05). For the expressive and receptive PRES scores, CAS group showed significantly decreased results compared to FAD and normal group. Only in the CAS group, expressive PRES showed significant decrease rather than receptive PRES score. The CAS group showed a significant difference in the two U-TAP CA compared to the FAD and normal groups. This result implies that repeated U-TAP can be useful for supportive diagnostic tool for CAS by detecting poor reliability of phonation.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the role of speech sound disorders in the development of children’s vocabulary through longitudinal analysis. Methods: Three hundred and twenty-four 6-year-old children were assessed in severity groups with speech sound disorders (SSD: general level, a slight error, the recommendation for in-depth examination, and suspected speech sound disorder). This study examined whether the model of change in vocabulary (receptive, expressive) original score according to age (3, 5, and 7 years old) of four SSD groups was suitable for the Latent Growth Model. In addition, cross-analysis was used to examine whether there was a significant difference in the classification of receptive and expressive vocabulary development normality (abnormal, normal development, slight delay, and vocabulary development delay) according to age changes in the four groups. Results: Results found that the severity of SSD did not affect vocabulary development continuity, but had a significant effect on the classification of vocabulary development normality standards. The severity of SSD had a significant effect on the development delay of the 7-year-old receptive vocabulary and the development delay of the 3-year-old expressive vocabulary. Conclusion: It would be desirable to check the vocabulary development of children with SSD according to age, understanding that subjects with suspected SSD can show significant differences in expressive vocabulary at the age of 3 and receptive vocabulary development at the age of 7.

The Effect of Vocal Rehearsal on Retrieval of New Phonological Representations in Children with and without Specific Language Impairment

Objectives: This research aims to study the ability to retain and retrieve new phonological representations (PR) with and without vocal rehearsals in children with specific language impairments (SLI) and typically developing (TD) children. Methods: Ten SLI children, 10 chronological age (CA)-matched children and 10 language age (LA)-matched children participated in the research. To compare the three groups' performance in terms of accuracy and error types, this test set time intervals of 10 seconds and 5 minutes; one with vocal rehearsal and one without vocal rehearsal after a lapse of time. The relationship among the new PR task performances and receptive vocabulary, and expressive vocabulary were examined. Results: SLI group showed significantly lower ability in retrieving new PR than CA group but were similar to LA group. The performance with vocal rehearsal was not significantly better than that without vocal rehearsal after 10 seconds but it was significantly better after 5 minutes. SLI group showed significantly more error types such as syllable omission, lexicalization and no response when compared to the two other groups. There were significant correlations among the new PR tasks, receptive vocabulary, and expressive vocabulary. Conclusion: The study results indicate that vocal rehearsals contribute to the improvement of new PR storage and retrieval in both SLI and TD children.
