New occurrences of small aquatic duckweeds (Araceae, Lemnoideae) in Maranhão state, northeastern Brazil

Abstract: This study presents the first records for Maranhão state, northeastern Brazil, of the duckweeds Lemna valdiviana Phil., Wolffia brasiliensis Wedd. and Wolffiella lingulata (Hegelm.) Hegelm. The species were collected in a survey of water bodies in the muncipalities of Caxias, Igarapé do Meio and São João do Sóter. “…Encyclia gonzalezii bloomed under cultivation between October and November, a time similar to the flowering period mentioned by Meneguzzo et al (2012), i.e., between September and October. Despite the botanical potential of Maranhão, not much research is available about surveying species. Recent studies in Maranhão have shown that, with increasing sampling effort, new records of Orchidaceae (Ferreira et al 2017(Ferreira et al , 2019aGomes et al 2021;Oliveira et al 2021;Pessoa et al in press) and other plant families (Ferreira et al , 2019bGuarçoni et al 2020b;Silva Júnior et al 2020) are discoverable. Even new species are found in Maranhão, as attested by Scatigna et al (2019), Guarçoni et al (2020a), andSantos et al (2020).…”

“…There is no record of any species in the Aristolochiaceae family for areas studied most strongly in Maranhão (Almeida Jr. et al, 2017), but it is noticed that given the diversity of environments and the low number of studies that new occurrences have been relatively frequent to be registered for different regions of Maranhão (Diniz et al, 2017;Ferreira et al, 2017;Ferreira et al, 2018;Ferreira et al, 2019a. ;Ferreira et al, 2019b. ;Guarçoni et al, 2018a.…”

“…Although Marahnão exhibits floristic potential, few studies on Bromeliaceae and other families of plants in the state are available, as shown by recently published new occurrences (e.g. Ferreira et al 2018;Guarçoni et al 2018;Ferreira et al 2019aFerreira et al , 2019bSalazar-Ferreira et al 2020;Silva et al 2020) and new species (e.g. Scatigna et al 2019;Guarçoni et al 2020).…”
