New Laser Source Technology

Abstract: Over the past 5 to 8 years several new laser sources have been developed as a result of R & D efforts stimulated by a growing number of laser applications. Four families of new devices-semiconductor diod laser arrays, free electron lasers, rare gas halide excimer sources, and several new tunable solid-state lasers-show particular promise.

“…Lasers have played an important role in the joining of materials since the invention of high power gas and solid state lasers in the 1960s [39][40][41][42][43]. Laser welding is used widely in the automotive manufacturing industry attributed to its ability to focus the intense beam (heat source) and reduce the weld bead width and the heat-affected zone (HAZ) regions [44].…”

“…Creating a focused beam allows very high energy densities in comparison to other conventional welding techniques. Because of this property, laser welding techniques have played an ever advancing role in the joining of materials since the invention of high power solid state and gas lasers in the 1960s [16,21,22,23,24].…”

“…Amniocentesis is used for the early detection of genetic diseases, teratological events, and fetal distress, particularly in domestic species (67). A new application of the laser in oncology involves its ability to initiate a lethal photochemical reaction in cancerous tissue during photoradiation therapy (41).…”
