New isomers in neutron-deficient isotopes of124Cs and127Ba

Abstract: ABSTRACT. By on-line mass separation and subsequent gamma and electron decay-spectroscopy at very low energy, two new isomers,124mcs(TI/2=6.3 • seconds) and 127mBa (TI/2=1.9• seconds) have been identified.

“…In our first investigation, in addition to the 31 s activity, five new low-energy transitions have been rapidly identified and assigned to an isomeric state in 124Cs. A (6.3-t-0.3) s half-life had been deduced and already reported [26]. As several experiments have been undertaken to establish energy measurements and multipolarities of the transitions, the half-life estimation has been refined.…”

“…The texture was determined from the normal direction (ND) in the 1/4 layer of the specimen using the X' pert MRD type X-ray diffractometer with Co K α radiation. Three incomplete pole figures {111}, {200} and {220} were measured, and they were used to calculate the orientation distribution function (ODF) with the two-step method [11] and the results are presented in terms of constant ϕ=45° section (Roe's notation). The microstructures of the longitudinal sections of the specimens were examined with an optical microscope.…”

“…With this picture one might expect isomeric states based either mainly on the ;+[404] or the $-[523] orbits. A two-second isomer has been observed in IZ7Ba from &decay measurements [3] but this was not subsequently seen in later laser work [l], possibly because of the short lifetime of the state. With this in mind we made a systematic search for long lived states in "' Ba using a newly developed ultrasensitive technique of laser spectroscopy.…”
