The conformation of the title molecule, C16H12N2O3, is partly determined by an intramolecular C=O...π interaction between one carbonyl group and the five-membered ring of the other indolinone moiety. The crystal packing consists of layers parallel to (001) formed by a combination of N—H...O and O—H...O hydrogen bonds and π–π stacking interactions. Both the N—H...O and O—H...O hydrogen bonds generate inversion dimers.

The solubility of isatin in different solvents was studied by a gravimetrical method from (298.15 to 318.15) K under atmospheric pressure and the solubility data were correlated against temperature. The solvents selected for the present study are: water, methanol, ethanol, 1-butanol, dichloromethane, dichloroethane, chloroform and carbon tetra chloride. Among chlorinated solvents, solubility is observed to be maximum in 1, 2-dichloroethane and minimum in dichloromethane whereas in alcohols, maximum solubility is observed in methanol. In water, solubility is found to be minimum. Further, some thermodynamic parameters such as Gibb's energy (ΔG sol ), heat of solution (ΔH sol ) and entropy of solution (ΔS sol ) have also been evaluated.

Isatin is an endogenous compound and possess a wide variety of biological activities. In the present investigation, a different isatin derivatives such as novel isatin 3-[N-(4-substituted)-hydrazinyl-3-oxo prop 1-en-2yl) benzamides and their antimicrobial, analgesic and anticonvulsant activity was evaluated in different animal models. Antimicrobial activity by cup plate agar diffusion method. The analgesic activity was measured by Eddy's hot plate method, and reaction time was recorded when the animals licked their for and hind paws and jumped at before 0 hr, 0.5 hr, 1 hr and 2 hrs after administration of test drugs. 4-aminopyridine chemical induction method was employed for anticonvulsant activity. All the compounds were screened, among the screened compounds some compounds showed antimicrobial, analgesic and anticonvulsant activity with dose-dependent effect when compared with the control group.
