New insights into the relationships between Paraboea, Trisepalum, and Phylloboea (Gesneriaceae) and their taxonomic consequences

Abstract: The phylogenetic relationships between Paraboea, Trisepalum and Phylloboea, in the twisted–fruited clade of the advanced Asiatic and Malesian Gesneriaceae, were investigated using nuclear and chloroplast data. Maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference analyses demonstrated unambiguously that the three genera originated from a single common ancestor, that Phylloboea is nested deeply in Trisepalum and that in turn Trisepalum is nested in Paraboea. As Paraboea has been conserved against Phylloboea and Trisepalum t… Show more

“…Weber & B.L.Burtt). Puglisi & al. (2011a) also examined relationships within the Boea group, focusing on the genera Paraboea, Trisepalum C.B.Clarke and Phylloboea Benth., resulting in them all being synonymised under Paraboea (following conservation of the name as proposed by , by far the largest genus in the Loxocarpinae.…”

“…Clarke) Ridley has recently been redefined to accommodate Phylloboea Benth and Trisepalum C.B. Clarke (Middleton et al 2010, Puglisi et al 2011), distributed from south to southwest China, Indo-China Peninsula to Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines (Burtt 1984, Xu and Burtt 1991, Xu et al 2008, Triboun and Middleton 2012). Many new taxa of this genus have been discovered and published in recent years (Chen et al 2008, Kiew 2010, Wei et al 2010, Chen et al 2012, Wen et al 2013, Wen and Wei 2016).…”

“…New genera have been described (Wei et al 2010;Middleton & Möller 2012;Middleton & Triboun 2012;Möller et al 2014) whilst other genera have been reduced to synonymy or re-circumscribed Puglisi et al 2011;Wang et al 2011;Weber et al 2011a, b). In addition large numbers of new species have been described, particularly from Thailand (e.g.…”

“…Five more were recently described (Middleton & Triboun 2013), making Thailand the centre of diversity for Microchirita. The limestone formations scattered across the country have been found to be exceptionally rich in Gesneriaceae, mostly narrowly endemic species, as is especially noticeable in Paraboea (Xu et al 2008;Puglisi et al 2011;Triboun & Middleton 2012).…”
