New Insights into IBD Epidemiology: Are There Any Lessons for Treatment?

Abstract: Changing trends in the epidemiology of IBD provide an opportunity to examine possible etiological hypotheses. Why did IBD emerge in developed nations in the middle of the 20th century? Why did it emerge initially as ulcerative colitis but now Crohn’s disease has become the predominate form of IBD in developed nations? Why is IBD emerging in recent years in developing nations and why is it that ulcerative colitis is the predominate form in these countries? In this chapter we will explore what is known about env… Show more

“…3,4 Monozygotic twin discordance rates and other epidemiologic data suggest that nutritional factors may play an important role in the development of these disorders. [5][6][7] The incidence of IBD peaks in young adults, suggesting that critical insults may influence the development of its key physiologic components (microbiota, gut mucosa and immune system) from fertilization through adolescence and induce IBD. Prenatal nutritional influences may produce persistent modifications in immune and mucosal-enterocyte maturation.…”

Given that smoking cessation programs are eff ective in helping patients quit, it is incumbent upon physicians to try to help their patients with CD quit ( 8 ). However, for UC, the situation is much less clear.…”

Yağlardan gelen enerji oranının da %25-30'larda olması sağlıklı beslenme alışkanlıkları ile örtüş-mektedir.…”
