A Serra da Jiboia é um importante maciço serrano que apresenta áreas significativas recobertas por remanescente de Mata Atlântica na região do Recôncavo da Bahia. O objetivo do trabalho é caracterizar o meio físico da área e identificar os domínios pedológicos, visando correlacioná-los à capacidade de uso atual das terras, subsidiando o planejamento de uso e ocupação. Os resultados demonstram que o ambiente apresenta fortes limitações à prática de atividades agropecuárias e/ou ocupação humana. Com base na interpretação da capacidade de uso das terras, restou demonstrado que, na Serra da Jiboia, as terras são mais apropriadas à manutenção da vegetação nativa, à proteção da flora e fauna silvestre, bem como para a recarga de aquíferos que abastecem a região.

The transition zone between the Archean blocks, Jequié and Itabuna-Salvador-Curaçá, in the county of Laje, Bahia, Brazil, is potentially important for iron ore deposits of economic interest. This research investigates one of the eighteen anomalies defined by a previous integrated interpretation of geological and airborne gamma ray spectrometry and magnetic data in this transition zone. Its choice resulted from being located in an area with intense transcurrent shear and from the occurrence of pebbles rich in magnetite. Because of paucity of surface geological information, a ground-based geophysical survey added valuable information for the definition of a drilling program in the area. The survey consisted of two parts and followed up the aforementioned previous integrated interpretation of the Valença sheet. The first part consisted of one gravity and magnetic profile, which indicated a favorable site for additional investigation. The second part consisted of a detailed survey in the selected area with gravity, magnetic, and VLF-EM. The interpretation of the data of the geophysical methods allowed to delineate two zones in the area, both located at magnetic anomalies, gravity highs and relatively conductive parts. The two zones have a high potential for iron ore, because they present significant and correlated anomalies.

Abstract. In this research paper were applied methods which integrate geophysical and petrological data to the crustal and lithospheric structure in the Sergipano Belt, in the Southern Borborema Province, NE Brazil. These methods allowed us to unveil the main crustal features and their tectonic relationships with the crust-mantle interface (Moho), as well as the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB) of this region. The crust structure was constrained by available geological, gravimetric and seismological data, and chemical composition for mantle bodies. Gravity, geoid and heat flow data integrated with existent geological and geophysical data provides to understand the evolution of the Southern Borborema Province. The modeling method was based on local isostasy in which the first phase of the work consisted on the filtering of geoid anomaly and topography data using low-pass in the harmonic and frequency domains, respectively, to estimate the thickness of the crust and the lithosphere, and the second phase is characterized by geothermal modeling. The crustal structure was constrained by geological information, thermo-physical parameters, and gravity and magnetic data inversion results, while the lithospheric mantle was constrained by chemical composition of xenoliths. The results show that maximum depths of Moho and thermal lithosphere (LAB) along the modeled profile are 34–42 km and 194–202 km observed, and temperatures are recorded with an average of 600 °C in the Moho temperature at Sergipano belt. The results presented suggest a thinning lithospheric mantle below the Sergipano belt, with values varying between 168 to 180 km, excepting in Girau do Ponciano whose is 194 km and a moderate lithospheric thickening below the Rio Coruripe, and thicker lithosphere at Pernambuco-Alagoas terrains reached 202 km.
