New functionalized 8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonic acid mesoporous silica (HQS-SBA-15) as an efficient catalyst for the synthesis of 2-thiohydantoin derivatives

Abstract: Mesoporous silica SBA-15 functionalized with 8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonic acid (HQS-SBA-15) was used as a new recyclable nanocatalyst for the one-pot synthesis of 2thiohydantoin derivatives under solvent-free conditions. The catalyst exhibited excellent recyclability at least for 3 times with a high catalytic activity.

“…[14] Among the various nanoreactors, mesoporous silicas, particularly SBA-15, have been widely studied. [15][16][17] Large surface areas, highly ordered mesoporous structures with regular channels, high hydrothermal and mechanical stability, uniform pore sizes, thick walls, wide accessibility and inert environment for immobilization of transition metal nanoparticles [18][19][20][21][22] make these structures excellent carriers for many metal species. [23] Investigation the application of metal nanoparticles in catalysis, [24] especially in organic synthesis, has received marked interest in research of nanocatalysis.…”

“…Direct treatment of compounds 36a and b with aqueous hydrochloric acid released the corresponding hydantoin 37a and thiohydantoin 37b, respectively. While base treatment of the same polymer resin 36a or b produced compound 38a or b after acid neutralization (Scheme 7) (7).…”
