“…It is important to implement measures for controlling transmission of T. cruzi by triatomines in the Amazon basin, with vector surveillance and control with insecticide as has been happening in other parts of Peru ( 5 ). In light of our exploratory results and other cases reported in the area, it could be of interest to perform similar studies to those carried out in other parts of Peru ( 15 , 17 , 23 ). Another topic to investigate in the area is dogs, which are important reservoirs of T. cruzi and may play a role in reinitiating transmission in previously sprayed areas.…”

“…The presence of pregnant women in the Amazon Basin who are at risk of congenital transmission to the fetus, along with other reported cases of acute Chagas Diseases ( 6 , 16 , 17 ) should serve as a warning of an (emerging) problem in this area of Peru. While the low prevalence does not justify screening in pregnant or puerperal women, other measures are called for.…”

“…The Mayuriaga village that was evaluated in our study also reported a case of human Chagas disease. 37 Future studies will assist to develop strategies for prevention, control, and diagnosis of American trypanosomiasis in the Peruvian Amazon Basin which presents a new and a different scenario for Chagas disease in Peru, where populations often live in remote and isolated locations with serious health-care access limitations.…”

“…In Peru, the first ACD case was reported in 1919 in the southeastern Amazonian department of Madre de Dios. Only a few ACD cases have been reported since, although multiple cases have been reported in recent years in Amazonian regions such as Pasco and Loreto [19]. In Ecuador, Chagas disease was first diagnosed in 1929 in Guayas, a coastal province.…”

“…During 2006 to 2010, six ACD cases were reported among children from the Aguaruna, Huambisa and Kandoshi communities in the Peruvian Amazon basin. ACD was attributed to either the biting of infected triatomines found inside the dwellings or oral transmission by drinking "masato" (a fermented beverage made with yuca) or "chapo" (a ripe banana beverage) since no traveling outside the community or blood transfusion was recorded [19]. ACD cases in indigenous communities in Ecuador Amazon region have been reported since 1987; a seroepidemiological study found a 6.0% (61/1011) of positive individuals from 15 of the 18 studied communities.…”
