New field observations and U-Pb ages in the Sudbury area: toward a detailed cross-section through the deformed Sudbury Structure

Abstract: The Sudbury area straddles the transition from the Archean Superior structural province to the Paleoproterozoic Southern province. To the south it is flanked by younger Proterozoic belts and finally the ca. 1 Ga Grenville Front. It is unique in that it also hosts the deformed remnants of one of the largest and oldest preserved impact structures in the geological record, the ~300 km diameter Sudbury Structure. This structure is characterized by a differentiated melt sheet, commonly referred to as the Sudbury Ig… Show more

“…Evidence from the Huronian Supergroup on the Superior Craton in Canada, which hosts three Paleoproterozoic glacial intervals, indicates that the GOE is bracketed in age between ca. 2,460 and 2,308 Ma (8)(9)(10). New observations from the critical Transvaal Supergroup in southern Africa indicate that the GOE may have occurred by ca.…”

“…Uranium‐lead dating of baddeleyite by Bleeker et al. () defined an age of 1849.1 ± 0.9 Ma, which confirms its origin as part of the Sudbury impact event. The Hess offset dike is dominated by QD that is composed of plagioclase + amphibole + biotite ± pyroxenes, with minor amounts of quartz and granophyric intergrowths of quartz and alkali feldspar (Wood and Spray ).…”

“…A sample of the South Range Norite was recently dated at 1849.7 ± 0.2 Ma using U‐Pb isotopic dating of baddeleyite and zircon grains (Bleeker et al. ). The contact between the Norite and the overlying Quartz Gabbro is gradational.…”

“…Target rock underlying the SIC in the North Range and the East Range is composed of heterogeneous amphibolite to granulite facies metamorphic gneiss, migmatite, and granitic to ganodioritic rock of the 2.7 Ga Levack Gneiss Complex (Dressler 1984b;Krogh et al 1984;Card 1994). In the South Range, the Main Mass SIC is underlain by 2.5-2.2 Ga metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks of the Huronian Supergroup, and the approximately 2.4 Ga Creighton and Murray granitoid plutons (Dressler 1984b;Krogh et al 1984;Bleeker et al 2013).…”
