New data for action. Data collection for KiGGS Wave 2 has been completed

Abstract: The fieldwork of the second follow-up to the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents (KiGGS) was completed in August 2017. KiGGS is part of the Robert Koch Institute’s Federal Health Monitoring. The study consists of the KiGGS cross-sectional component (a nationally representative, periodic cross-sectional survey of children and adolescents aged between 0 and 17) and the KiGGS cohort (the follow-up into adulthood of participants who took part in the KiGGS baseline study). Ki… Show more

“…The GerES V population is a stratified random subsample of the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents (KiGGS Wave 2) of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) [ 29 ]. From January 2015 to June 2017, a sample was recruited as representative of their age and sex based on population registry data in a random two-stage sampling procedure.…”

“…Briefly, RKI recruited a population representative sample in 167 locations in Germany reflecting the grade of urbanization and geographical distribution which are considered representative of the whole of Germany. Out of these, the 3–17 years old random subsamples were drawn [ 29 ]. The study population characteristic is described by Schulz et al [ 30 ].…”

“…The KiGGS wave two studies comprised a nationwide, representative cross-sectional sample of children the age of 0–17 years from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) [ 24 ]. A comprehensive overview of data architecture, collection, and management has been published [ 25 ]. Of the 15,023 children in the KiGGS Wave 2 data set, 4686 children were available for the analysis.…”

“…In the KiGGS survey, weighting variables were calculated to compensate for imbalances in certain variables with respect to the general German population of children and adolescents [ 25 ]. Since it is not the aim of the present analysis to estimate a population prevalence and because the sampling design is assumed to be non-informative, i.e., survey selection probabilities are not correlated with the outcome of factors [ 26 ], the weights were not used in our analyses.…”

“…KiGGS Wave 2 used a nationally representative probability sample of 15,023 children and adolescents (49.8% male) aged 0-17 years. A detailed description of the survey methodology can be found in Mauz et al (2017) and Lange et al (2018). In brief, one parent (82.5% mothers) of the recruited children and adolescents provided information on a wide spectrum of health-relevant topics.…”
