New continental record and new species of Austromerope (Mecoptera, Meropeidae) from Brazil

Abstract: A new species of Meropeidae (Mecoptera) from Brazil, Austromerope brasiliensis sp. n., is described, representing only the 3rd extant species described in this family and the 1st record of the family from the Neotropical region. The distribution and biogeography of the family are discussed and we propose that Meropeidae originated before continental drift and then divided into two branches, northern and southern, with the breakup of Pangea. Identification keys for the Neotropical families of Mecoptera and for … Show more

“…L), found in forested habitats in the HRP (see Abbott, Burbidge & Wills, ). The Meropeidae are known from only three extant species: Merope tuber from eastern North America; A. poultoni endemic to SWWA; and the recently discovered A. brasiliensis from Espírito Santo, Brazil (Machado, Kawada & Rafael, ). Given this distribution, and given additional fossil evidence and morphology, it has been proposed that modern Meropeidae are now highly disjunct Pangaean relicts (Machado et al , ), although this hypothesis remains to be tested phylogenetically.…”

“…Despite all of this loss, remaining forest fragments harbor exceptionally diverse fauna and flora with extremely high levels of speciation and endemism on the one hand, and the persistence of old lineages via low species extinction rates on the other hand, which makes this biome both a cradle and a museum of Neotropical diversity [ 31 , 33 , 63 ]. Many interesting insects were reported from the Atlantic Forest, including the bioluminescent larvae of Keroplatidae fungus gnats (Diptera) [ 64 ] and rove beetles (Staphylinidae) [ 65 ], the first Neotropical meropeid Mecoptera [ 66 ], ant-brood parasitizing scuttle flies (Phoridae) [ 67 ], and many others. The late discovery of Jurasaidae in the Atlantic Forest might seem surprising at first sight, but considering high numbers of recently reported new lineages in other soft-bodied elateroids, including Lampyridae [ 56 , 57 , 68 , 69 , 70 , 71 , 72 , 73 , 74 ], Lycidae [ 19 , 75 ], and Phengodidae [ 76 , 77 ], it is much less surprising.…”
