New Compounds and Potential Candidates for Drug Discovery from Medicinal Plants of Vietnam

Abstract: The study of natural products introduces interesting new bioorganic structures and potential candidates for the drug discovery stage in the development of innovative drugs. Vietnam enjoys a broad biodiversity of native plant species, microorganisms, marine organisms, and a long tradition of using herbal remedies. Thus, the study of medicinal plants in determining the basis of their efficacy and safety is an important task for modern researchers in Vietnam. The present review covers literature on new compounds … Show more

“…The flora of Vietnam comprises about 57% of the global plant families, 15% of plant genera, and 4% of plant species. 28 It was estimated that 3950 out of 12,000 vascular plant species have been used in traditional Vietnamese medicine (TVM). 29 D. styracifolium Kim ti n th o in Vietnamese) is a medicinal herb used in TVM for its effectiveness in the treatment of diuresis, hyperthermia, renal stones, cardio-cerebrovascular diseases, and hepatitis.…”

“…Owing to a vast reservoir of unexploited medicinal plants, the Vietnamese medicinal plants have the potential to offer compounds of various structural and stereochemical types for the screening of lead compounds [ 8 ]. The safety of ethanol extracts prepared from E. japonicum and Foeniculum vulgare was evidenced from a recent toxicity test in mice [ 9 ]. Stem extracts from E. japonicum suppressed lipid accumulation and inhibited the expression of adipocyte markers and coumaric acid and its methyl ester were isolated from the extracts as the bioactive components [ 10 ].…”
