New composites of betulin esters with arabinogalactan as highly potent anti-cancer agents

Abstract: Betulin and its esters are the natural compounds with high in vitro cytotoxicity toward many cancer cells. However, the poor water solubility of these compounds has limited their applications. We prepared new composites of betulin esters using two methods, namely ball milling of the mixtures of betulin esters with arabinogalactan and preparation of thin films of these mixtures by evaporating the aqueous solutions. These composites revealed higher water solubility as compared to the initial substances without l… Show more

“…This triterpene shows potent activity against several bacterial species such as S. aureus , Enterococcus faecalis , S. mutans, S. sobrinus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis [ 233 , 234 , 235 ]. Unfortunately, low solubility and stability of ursolic acid in aqueous medium hinder its therapeutic application and require the development of water-soluble formulations [ 230 , 236 ].…”

“…AG can serve as a targeted carrier for the delivery of diagnostic and therapeutic agents, as well as enzymes, nucleic acids, vitamins or hormones to specific cells [3][4][5][6]. AG is used in medicine in the treatment of various gastrointestinal diseases [7], has adhesive properties and exhibits antimicrobial [8], antimycobacterial [9], antioxidant and immunological [10], antiviral [11] and anticancer [12] activity.…”

“…Its potent biological activity and immune-enhancing properties have received increased attention as a clinically useful nutraceutical agent (25). AG has several properties which make it an ideal adjunct supplement to be considered in cancer protocols (26). Aqueous extract of T. cordifolia is enriched in the polysaccharide fraction containing AG when compared with other types of extract (27).…”
