New Approach of Metals Removal from Acid Mine Drainage

Abstract: The possibility of metal removal from the real acid mine drainage (AMD) in the area of copper ore mines in the southeast Serbia, was investigated through a combination of neutralization and adsorption methods. This approach of metal removal from AMD includes a two-step neutralization method in the first phase, aiming to separate metals as sludge. The results of laboratory test revealed that more than 99 mass % of Fe is removed up to pH 4 and more than 99 mass % of Cu up to pH 7. Based on the results obtained i… Show more

“…This study also establishes that the examined AMD displays higher contaminant levels compared to similar occurrences on the same island in Sumatera, Indonesia [20]. The prominent Fe concentration identified in this study is attributed to a combination of chemical and bacterial processes [29]. Furthermore, the low pH level evident in this particular AMD presents an additional hazard to the surrounding ecosystem of this abandoned mining site.…”

“…The study, realized in the earlier period, has confirmed that very serious environmental impacts are detected 30 km along the Bela River. Inflowing of the untreated AMD water from an overburden disposal as well as from flotation tailing dumps will continue to significantly impact the local and regional water resources [40].…”

“…1), which is fed by surface water drainage and seepage. From seepage of the disposed waste materials and /or from accumulation of leach solution from heap leachings, this water is highly contaminated with the site specific compounds like sulphate, iron and trace metal elements concurrent to low pH-values below 3 (Gardić et al 2017;Markovic et al 2020). Also, the colour of the water is red (Fig.…”

“…Chemical characterization of the Robule Lake wastewater samples treated byMarkovic et al 2020 Results of neutralization tests, presented in Table11, show that Fe removal degree on pH 4 was 99.7% mass. This value confirmed that Fe conversion into the insoluble hydroxide form was almost finished on pH 4 and it was the good option for separation the Fe ions from the other ions elements that existed in AMD from the Robule Lake.…”
