“…Mussels sp. has been shown to efficiently bio-accumulate trace contaminants and has been established as a sentinel organism in the monitoring of water quality and in research programs (Ciacci et al, 2012;D'Agata et al, 2014;Cappello et al, 2015). Mussels are sessile filter feeders, able to accumulate and tolerate high concentrations of pollutants, present across a very wide geographical areas, easy to collect, and particularly abundant in coastal and estuarine waters (Goldberg, 1986).…”

“…It is well established that mussels are suitable organisms for environmental quality assessment since they are able to provide cellular and physiological responses to general contamination (Cappello et al, 2015(Cappello et al, , 2013a(Cappello et al, , 2013bCiacci et al, 2012;Fasulo et al, 2012a;Sureda et al, 2011;Widdows J, 1992). The contamination levels in Cabrera Island are low in contrast to the surroundings of Magaluf that is catalogued as a medium-polluted site.…”

“…Consequently, lower AChE activity is interpreted as a signal, very reliable, of exposure and effect. The inhibition of AChE results in the accumulation of acetylcholine and subsequently on the functionality of cholinergic system at the branchial level, compromising both the filtration capacity as the ciliary motility (Cappello et al, 2015(Cappello et al, , 2013bD'Agata et al, 2014b).…”

“…In embryos, AChE level increases during gastrulation and post-gastrulation, as it is probably involved in the neuronal differentiation (Akasaka et al, 1986;Ohta et al, 2009). AChE is known to be an essential enzyme for cholinergic neurotransmission in both vertebrates and invertebrates, including sea urchin, and its measurement is used as biomarkers of neurotoxicity in several environmental studies (Cappello et al, 2015;D'Agata et al, 2014b;De Domenico et al, 2013;Fasulo et al, 2010a;Matozzo et al, 2005). The enzymatic analysis of AChE activity performed in this study on pluteus stages showed a slight inhibition at NP exposures lower than 7 ppb in respect to negative control, and a drastic decrease at the higher concentrations and in the positive control.…”
