Objectives:Cognitive flexibility, shame, and emotion regulation difficulties are considered potential mediating factors that may explain the relationship between neuroticism and depression severity. The aim of this study was to examine the mediating role of cognitive flexibility, shame and emotion dysregulation in the relationship between neuroticism and depression among university students.Methods: A total of 271 students (102 males and 169 females) were selected by cluster random sampling from University of Tehran, Allameh Tabataba'i University, and Iran University of Science & Technology. Cognitive Flexibility Inventory (CFI), Test of Self-Conscious Affect-2 (TOSCA-2), Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), NEO Five-Factor Inventory, and Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) were used to collect the data. Pearson correlation, multiple regression, and path analysis were applied for data analysis.Results: It was found that neuroticism was significantly associated with depression and all three mediators (P<0.0001). Neuroticism by means of emotion dysregulation was the only significant indirect effect on depression (P<0.0001). First total mediation model had a poor fit to the data, CMIN=87, P<0.0001, CMIN/df=21.75, CFI=82, RMSEA=28.Discussion: These findings suggest that for student depression, emotion dysregulation might be important and future intervention works can examine the effects of targeting emotion dysregulation among university students with high levels of neuroticism and/or depression.

ResumenEl presente estudio tuvo como objetivo identificar las evidencias de validez de la estructura interna y en relación con otras variables del Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ-18) en adolescentes peruanos. La muestra fue de 255 adolescentes entre los 13 y 19 años (Medad 15.494, DEedad=1.192) de una Institución Educativa pública del distrito de Ventanilla (Perú). Los instrumentos utilizados fueron el CERQ-18 y el Inventario de Depresión Estado/Rasgo. Se plantearon cuatro hipótesis estructurales que fueron evaluados mediante un análisis factorial confirmatorio, incluyendo análisis bifactor. Los resultados indican que el modelo evolucionista representadas por las estrategias automáticas (autoculpa, rumiación, catastrofización) y elaborativas (aceptación, focalización en los planes, reinterpretación positiva, focalización positiva y poner en perspectiva), presentan indicadores satisfactorios, favoreciendo su interpretación, y mostrando relaciones significativas con afecto positivo y negativo. Se concluye que la estructura interna del CERQ-18 en adolescentes es respaldada por el modelo evolucionista. Palabras clave: estrategias cognitivas de regulación emocional, CERQ, validación, adolescentes AbstractThe present study aimed to identify the evidence of validity of the internal structure and in relation to other variables of the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ-18) in peruvian adolescents. The sample consisted of 255 adolescents between the ages of 13 and 19 (M=15.494, DE=1.192) from a public school of the district of Ventanilla (Peru). The instruments used were the CERQ-18 and the State / Trait Depression Inventory. Four structural hypotheses were proposed, which were evaluated by confirmatory factor analysis, including bifactor analysis. The results indicate that the evolutionary model represented by automatic (self-blame, rumination, catastrophization) and deliberate strategies (acceptance, refocus on planning, positive reappraisal, positive refocusing and putting into perspective), present satisfactory indicators, favoring their interpretation, and showing significant relationships with positive and negative affect. It is concluded that the internal structure of CERQ-18 in adolescents is supported by the evolutionary model.

BackgroundDepression is a broad and heterogeneous diagnostic grouping, central to which is depressed mood or inability to enjoy most activities. Depressive symptoms are frequently accompanied by conduct problems stemming from anger. It is very important to know the interrelation of these emotions very well to be able to help adolescents to manage them more easily. The main aim of this article is to present the problem of interaction between negative affects (emotional instability, anger state and trait, physical and verbal aggression and depression) analyzing the different relationship through the time in spanish sample.Material and MethodsThe sample included 470 adolescents (192 boys and 225 girls) in a three-wave longitudinal study in Valencia (Spain). The mean age was 14.70 in the first wave. Structural equations modelling was employed to explore two longitudinal models.ResultsThe results show differences based on sex, and that an internalised variable, like emotional instability, is relevant to prevent the appearance of depression directly in girls and also the later appearance of aggression as long as anger mediates, in both boys and girls, so the control of anger becomes an important goal to control the rest of the negative affects.ConclusionsThis results has consequences in the preparation of all programmes that try to establish an emotional control on adolescents, as not only has to be taken into account as a direct goal the control of externalised emotions like anger, but internalised emotions like emotional instability have to be taken into account also. Furthermore, it is also made apparent that not only the punctual explosions and externalisation of anger have to be worked on, but the temperamental aspects which are the base of anger trait have to be worked on too.
