(Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) fed with Aleurocanthus woglumi (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae)

Abstract: This study evaluated the development and reproduction of Ceraeochrysa cubana when fed the citrus blackfly Aleurocanthus woglumi. The study was carried out at the Laboratory of Entomology, Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, Federal University of Paraíba – Areia/PB. It used a completely randomized design. The study was conducted in climate chambers, regulated to 26 ± 2°C and a relative humidity of 70 ± 10% with a 12 h photoperiod. The treatments were as follows: eggs, nymphs of only the 1st, 2nd, 3r… Show more

“…The Dermaptera are terrestrial insects with nocturnal habits and about 1800 species are distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions [1], including several species with predatory habits. Furthermore, studies have investigated the behavior and the biological development of the genera Euborellia and Doru, with the predation of numerous agricultural pests such as Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, and Hemiptera [2,3,4,5,6,7], and Lepidoptera [8,9], in the egg stages and young forms, respectively. These are commonly known in Brazil as "tesourinhas" ("earwig"), because they have two tweezer-like structures at the end of the thorax.…”

“…In Brazil, one of the most studied chrysopidae species is the Ceraeochrysa cubana (Hagen) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae), recommended for insect pest control (Oliveira et al, 2014;Oliveira et al, 2016). However, studies are still scarce regarding their predation behavior and potential in controlling some pest insects, such as the aphids.…”

“…Ceraeochrysa cubana is widespread in the Neotropics, has resistance to various insecticides (Cordeiro et al 2010;Ono et al 2017) and preys on several agricultural pests, such as Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith, 1797) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) (Nunes et al 2017), Aleurocanthus woglumi Ashby, 1915 (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) (Oliveira et al 2016) and Aphis gossypii Glover, 1877 (Hemiptera: Aphididae) (Alcantra et al 2008). Our results suggest that C. cubana is well adapted to the climatic and environmental conditions in Acre, and may be a suitable candidate for use in biological control programs for coffee pests in Acre, such as Praelongorthezia praelonga (Douglas, 1891) (Hemiptera: Ortheziidae), Leucoptera coffeella (Guérin-Mèneville & Perrottet, 1842) (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae) and Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes, 1939) (Acari: Tenuipalpidae), which are known to be predated by other Chrysopidae species (Chrysopa sp.…”
