Neuroprotective Potentials of Panax Ginseng Against Alzheimer’s Disease: A Review of Preclinical and Clinical Evidences

Abstract: Alzheimer’s disease (AD), a neurodegenerative disorder, is a major health concern in the increasingly aged population worldwide. Currently, no clinically effective drug can halt the progression of AD. Panax ginseng C.A. Mey. is a well-known medicinal plant that contains ginsenosides, gintonin, and other components and has neuroprotective effects against a series of pathological cascades in AD, including beta-amyloid formation, neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction. In this review, … Show more

“…In the case of oncology, this is likely caused by generally poor prognosis of patients with different kinds of cancer who have run out of approved treatments [ 22 ]. The high number of expanded access studies in neurology may be associated with the fact that some relatively frequent chronic neurological diseases (eg, Alzheimer’s disease) do not have effective treatments [ 23 ]. The high demand for unapproved treatments in infectious diseases can be a result of the development of resistance to approved drugs [ 24 , 25 ].…”

“…In conclusion, Panax ginseng , a well-known medicinal plant that contains ginsenosides, gintonin, and other components, has neuroprotective effects in neuronal cells and animal models by stimulation of BDNF expression in AD. The findings from clinical trials further indicate that Panax ginseng or its formula treatment is safe and has a positive effect on cognition in patients with AD [ 81 83 ]. Therefore, it is of great value to carry out clinical trial research to further evaluate the therapeutic effects of ginseng, formulas, and combinations with other TCM and drugs, in patients with different stages of AD, and further explore the underlying molecular mechanisms of neuroprotection [ 84 ].…”

“…Although CK is regarded as safe and well-tolerated, findings from clinical trials are marginal and based on CK-rich fermented red ginseng. Delivery of CK through nanocarriers was reported to override its limitations of efflux, poor water solubility, and membrane permeability, which impeded the research progress into clinical trials [60,61].…”
