Neuropharmacological and antibacterial effects of the ethyl acetate extract of Diospyros malabarica (Ebenaceae) seeds

Abstract: Background: Diospyros malabarica is a well known flowering plant indigenous to Indian subcontinent which is used in folklore medicine for several purposes. Our study is designed to assess the neuropharmacological and antibacterial efficacy of the ethyl acetate extract of D. malabarica seeds. Methods: The behavioral anxiolytic activities of the extract were assessed by using open field (OFT), hole cross (HCT), elevated plus maze (EPZ), hole board (HBT), light dark test (LDT); and antidepressant activities throu… Show more

“…Before starting the motor behavioral test (single pellet reaching task), animals are tested to assess their anxiety. For this reason, we have performed the open feld maze test, which is extensively used to evaluate rodent's locomotion and anxiety behavior [25]. For mice, the test area typically consists of a (42 cm × 42 cm × 42 cm) PVC-box, and a camera is used to monitor the movement into and around the central and peripheral regions of the box.…”

“…The solvent was then filtered with Whatman filter paper (GE Healthcare UK Limited, UK). Then the filtrate was concentrated under a vacuum rotary evaporator (EV400, Lab Tech, Inc., USA) and finally dried in an automatic lyophilizer (VirTis BenchTop Pro, SP Scientific, USA) to yield the extract (Sharmin et al, 2018). The different experimented dose of S. cumini seeds and F. racemosa fruit extracts (calculated as per the body weight of each animal) were dissolved in 0.5 ml of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) before being used on the animal.…”
