“…This peptidergic heterogeneity of inhibitory neurons allows for multilevel gating of behavioural outputs by modulating tonic inhibition of CeM effector neurons (Ciocchi et al, 2010). Much knowledge of the CeA microcircuitry has come from electrophysiological and optogenetic dissection of fear circuits (Babaev et al, 2018;Beyeler & Dabrowska, 2020). Most widely studied are two distinct populations of CeC/CeL cells that can be distinguished by their expression of either protein kinase C δ (PKC δ) or somatostatin (SST) (Haubensak et al, 2010;Hunt et al, 2017).…”

“…Optogenetic stimulation of OT release in the CeA prior to testing reduced freezing responses, an effect abolished by OTA ( Knobloch et al, 2012 ). Both of these studies suggest that OT (either via injection or optogenetically stimulated release) primarily activates CeL neurons, which in turn increases GABA-ergic inhibition in PAG-projecting CeM output neurons, leading to the attenuation of contextual fear responses (for details on the OT-modulated neurocircuitry, see Beyeler and Dabrowska, 2020 ). In contrast to the study by Knobloch and colleagues (2012) in female rats, infusion of OT at various doses (0.6, 3, 15, and 75 ng) in the CeA of male rats before the first recall test resulted in higher levels of freezing during the test ( Campbell-Smith et al, 2015 ).…”

“…One reductionist approach to understanding amygdala computation lies in identifying functional contributions of specific amygdalar regions ( Beyeler and Dabrowska, 2020 ). The basolateral amygdala complex (BLA) is one region that has received particular attention, in large part due to its high degree of reciprocal long-range connectivity with other brain regions ( Amir et al, 2018 ; Janak and Tye, 2015 ; Little and Carter, 2013 ; McGarry and Carter, 2017 ; Senn et al, 2014 ).…”
