Neuroendocrine rhythms

Abstract: Hormones are secreted with circhoral, circadian and seasonal periodicities. Circhoral pulsatility is a temporal code, many chronic and acute changes in neuroendocrine status being mediated by changes in the frequency of circhoral release. The identity of the neuronal circuits controlling circhoral release is not known. Circadian release of hormones occurs with a precise temporal order entrained to the light-dark cycle, synchronized to the activity/rest rhythm and generated by circadian oscillators, of which th… Show more

“…Intranasal OT in OCD patients fails to show symptoms improvement in four studies, but shows improvement in one study; however, additional and detailed experimental design would help answer this question. 17 Hastings 78 proposed a mechanism that would be responsible for the relationship between OCD and OT. A provoking situation or 'normal' doubt would induce the release of OT in limbic and autonomic regions.…”

“…The present review highlights the current understanding of circadian system regulation of endocrine rhythms via multiple means of modulation and proposes a novel mechanism of hierarchical control beginning with the master brain clock. For a complete description of daily hormone secretion patterns, the reader is referred to the following reviews (Gore, 1998;Hastings, 1991;Kriegsfeld et al, 2002a;Turek and Van Cauter, 1994).…”

“…The physiological significance of pulsatile hormone secretion was first demonstrated when it was shown that intermittent, rather than continuous, delivery of GnRH was essential for normal reproductive function (1). Physiologic implications of pulsatile release with frequencies in the so-called "ultradian" range (i.e., 1-3 h) have been since demonstrated for most hormones of the hypothalamo-pituitary axis (2).…”
