Neuroendocrine Carcinoma Arising in a Mediastinal Teratoma with Pulmonary Metastasis: A Case Report and the Chemotherapy Response

Abstract: Neuroendocrine carcinoma as a somatic-type malignancy (STM) arising in an extragonadal teratoma is extremely rare. The effect of chemotherapy has been poorly evaluated in such cases contrary to teratomas with other STMs. We herein demonstrate that systemic chemotherapy may be beneficial in a case of neuroendocrine carcinoma arising in a mediastinal teratoma with pulmonary metastasis. A 31-year-old man presented with mediastinal widening visualized on a chest radiograph. Computed tomography showed a huge medias… Show more

“…STM is defined as a germ cell tumor accompanied by a nongerm cell tumor such as sarcoma, carcinoma, leukemia, or lymphoma. STM is rare and is observed in ~2-3% of all male germ cell tumors and about one-third occur in the mediastinum [ 1 5 ]. In STM, neuroendocrine carcinoma is extremely rare [ 1 ].…”

“…Somatic-type solid malignancies can occur in primary germ cells tumor or only in metastases. 8,9,10, 11 The epithelial malignancies associated with germ cells tumor are mostly colonic type adenocarcinomas, adenosquamous carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. 7 This paper reported the case of a 19 years old female diagnosed with a mediastinal tumor, suspicious of teratoma.…”
