Neural networks as a tool for control and management of a biological reactor for treating hydrogen sulphide

Abstract: Based on an experimental database consisting of 194 daily cases, artificial neural networks were used to model the removal efficiency of a biofilter for treating hydrogen sulphide (H2S). In this work, the removal efficiency of the reactor was considered as a function of the changes in the air flow and concentration of H2S entering the biofilter. In order to obtain true representative values, the removal efficiencies (outputs) were measured 24 h after each input was changed. A MLP (multilayer perceptron 2-2-1) … Show more

“…For the five pollutants analyzed, predictions are made using all the types of NNs [4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. However, it was necessary to analyze the effect that the spatial variability of pollutants' emissions have on the different models used at each location.…”

“…For this study, historical hourly records of the above mentioned variables corresponding to years 2000 and 2001 were available [4][5][6][7]. Data of year 2000 were used to build the different groups of candidate prognostic models while data belonging to year 2001 were reserved to test and select the best model.…”

“…The preliminary experiments were performed by adding 1 L of toluene or acetone to the bottles with a syringe. Each bottle septum was perforated 8,10,12,14,18, and 20 times with the syringe and possible leakage was determined by weighing every 12 hr. During these experiments, the Mininert valve was in the open position and the bottles were placed on an orbital shaker (Selecta).…”

“…Thus, different mathematical and statistical models have been proposed in the literature. [17][18][19][20][21] Nevertheless, microbial growth with degrading activity is a wholly undetermined key parameter that governs biofilter "success." The support material itself can supply the biomass responsible for degradation.…”

“…Simulations were also done at the center point of the network parameters, which was used for calculating the errors. Furthermore, for the testing data set, the total mean squared error (RMSE) was computed according to the formulae given by Elias et al (2006). The effects of the main variable and their mutual interactions were analyzed using the F (Fisher's F value), P (Probability value) and T (Student 't' test) values.…”
